  1. 1The present grading system does not include Kupffer cell iron staining greater than grade 3. In all subjects, the mean hepatocyte grade (± 1 SD) was 0.83 ± 0.96; the mean Kupffer cell grade was 0.32 ± 0.31. A gradient of stainable iron in hepatocytes from the periportal area decreasing towards the hepatic venule was observed in 56 subjects.
